The Union Catalogue of the three German research institutes was initiated by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Amongst its special features are coverage of articles in periodicals etc., and intense subject indexing for titles entered since 1996. The database is increasing with the retrospective conversion of the card catalogues.

Since december 2005 the Union Catalogue comprises also articles from E-Journals, they are indexed by ZI within the scope of the project of arthistoricum.net (module ARTicles online) which is promoted by the DFG.

The database currently (January 2010) contains about 1,480,800 titles, of which 772,775 articles. It is also target system of artlibraries.net - Virtual Catalogue for Art History.
